Starting a Data Science Blog

The Paths To Data Science

The journey towards data science is foggy. However, with all of the uncertainty in the paths one can take to become one, there is certainty in what every data scientist must do. They must tell stories, they must ask questions, they must compete in kaggle competitions, they must practice statistics better than software developers, they must build software better than staticians, and they must specialize in some domain of knowledge.

It’s also recommended, in the name of coding and collaboration, that they must use github <-(checkout my github profile. There is not much to see yet. BUT, If you’re interested in what you see, feel free to shoot me a message!) and FINALLY, they MUST maintain a data science blog!

My Data Science Blog

So, this is my data science blog and here are some questions that I should probably answer:

  • Who is writing this blog?
  • What domain(s) will he pursue?
  • What curiosities will he explore?
  • What kind of stories will he tell?

Who Is The Author?

First and foremost, my name is Michael. I think that data science is great. In 2014 I graduated from Hofstra University with a B.S. is math and physics, from 2014-2015 I took a year off, and since then I have been a graduate student at Purdue University.

What Is My Domain?

I am currently exploring the domain of Materials Engineering and along this voyage, I’m going to investigate its boundaries with the data science field. There already exists an emerging subfield of Materials Engineering called Materials Informatics with an agenda of data-driven decision making using a new style of thinking (this will likely be a primary source of inspiration for my posts).

What Are My Curiosities?

For now, my plans for curiosities include exploring quantitative finance and blockchain, software development (lets start with git), LeetCode problems <- (check out my work!), and (maybe we could team up!) -> Kaggle competitions.

What Kind Of Stories Will I Tell?

.

The truth is, I am not entirely sure.

.

I will start with some tutorials. Breaking down complex ideas. My goal is that these will be things that other data science enthusiasts will find useful. There is a reservoir of powerful tools to be discovered and I will make my best effort to share the toolset that I uncover with all of you to the best of my ability.

Moving Forward

I think I have painted enough of a portrait for this first blog post and so I am going to end this with an inspirational quote:

“Fall in love with some activity, and do it! Nobody ever figures out what life is all about, and it doesn’t matter. Explore the world. Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough. Work as hard and as much as you want to on the things you like to do the best. Don’t think about what you want to be, but what you want to do. ”

Richard P. Feynman

P.S. You can expect to see some of my recent developments with version control in my next post!
